2013 Study Tour* to Lower Egypt Including the Faiyum, Alexandria and the Delta

Day 1: International flight from LHR to Cairo with Egyptair for a two night stay at the Safir Hotel in
the peaceful but convenient Dokki area of Cairo.

Day 2: Full Day in Saqqara visiting all publically open areas that time allows, including the Serapeum, the recently opened New Kingdom tombs of Horemheb and Maya, the tomb of the Two Brothers and the Step Pyramid Complex

Day 3: We travel to the Faiyum for a three night stay at Auberge de Lac. Our site visits cover a wide chronological span as we visit the Old Kingdom Pyramid Complex of Meidum, the small museum at Kom Aushim (if open) and the Greco-Roman town of Karanis. Evening Lecture : Faiyum : Professor Barry Kemp.

Day 4: For our first full day in the Faiyum we visit less well-known sites of the region including the Ptolemaic site of Dionysias (Qasr Qarun), the site of Medinet Madi with Middle Kingdom (Amenemhat III) and Ptolemaic temples, and the Middle Kingdom Tomb of Waj at Khilwa (with special permission).

Day 5: Pyramids of the Faiyum. After stopping to view the Senwosret I Obelisk in the urban setting of Medinet Faiyum we visit two major Middle Kingdom mortuary sites, the site of the Pyramid Complex of Amenemhat III at Hawara including the so-called Labyrinth and the Pyramid Complex of Senwosret II at Lahun associated with the town site of Kahun.

Day 6: Long drive to Alexandria (4 nights at Windsor Palace Hotel) via desert road from Giza through the Wadi El-Natrun where we start our Coptic day by visiting at least two monasteries of the Wadi El-Natrun before heading for the world heritage site of Abu Mena, an early Christian city built over the tomb of the martyr Menas of Alexandria, who died in AD 296. Evening Lecture : Alexandria Sites (Professor Barry Kemp).

Day 7:
A full day of sightseeing in Alexandria including the Catacombs of Kom el Shuqafa, the Citadel and museum, the Serapeum and Pompey's Pillar and the Necropolis of Anfushi

Day 8:
We travel along the coast today for our excursion to the Ptolemaic temple and lighthouse site of Taposiris Magna and the war cemetery at El-Alamein before returning to Alexandria

Day 9:
For our final day in Alexandria we visit the Roman Amphitheatre at Kom al Dikka, the El-Shatbi Necropolis, and the Mustafa Kamal Necropolis, the Alexandria National Museum and in complete contrast the ultra-modern Bibliotheca Alexandria

Day 10: We drive east into the Delta to Mansura staying at the Marshal el Gezira Hotel (1 night). We visit Rosetta/El-Rashid en-route including historic merchants houses and the late 15C (AD) Fort of Qaytbay the bathouse of which was the site of the Rosetta Stone where it was used as a paving slab and the fascinating site of Buto (Tell el-Fara'in) (special permission). Evening Lecture : Delta Sites (Professor Barry Kemp).

Day 11:
Today visit the Central Delta sites of Tell el-Ruba (Mendes, Djedet) and Behbeit el-Hagar (both with special permission) and finally Tell Basta (Bubastis in m
odern Zagazig) before heading east to Ismailia staying at the Mercure Hotel for 2 nights.
Day 12: We first see the rarely visited museum at Ismailia before visiting the sites of Tell el-Maskhuta (special permission) and the Late Period fortress site of Tell Dafna (Defenneh) (special permission).

Day 13: For our final day in the Delta we leave Ismailia to visit the major Third Intermediate Period and later site of Tanis (San el-Hagar) before heading back to Cairo and the Safir Hotel for 1 night

Day 14: On our final morning there is an optional excursion to downtown Cairo and the Egyptian Museum before leaving for our afternoon direct return flight with Egyptair from Cairo to LHR.
Alternatively tour members may stay in Cairo for an extension at the Safir Hotel on a Bed and Breakfast basis.
